Veteran Hong Kong director Patrick Tam Ka-Ming has emerged from self-imposed exile to shoot his first movie in 17 years.

He is in Malaysia directing "After This Our Exile," a $3 million coming-of-age story about the tumultuous relationship between a young boy and his abusive father.

An assistant professor of creative studies at a local university, Tam spent six years working on the script with one of his students.

He was one of Hong Kong's top "new wave" directors of the 1970s, but has not shot a film since 1989's "My Heart Is That Eternal Rose."

"After This Our Exile" stars Hong Kong heartthrob Aaron Kwok, Charlie Young, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Kelly Lin and Qin Hailu.
